April Parent Guide

Message from the Dean of Students Regarding Nerf Wars

It has been brought to our attention that our seniors may have organized and are participating in a game called Nerf Wars. We want you, the parents, to know this is NOT a school-sanctioned event and Bellarmine does not support this activity. From experience, we know this game has the potential of being dangerous and disruptive. In the past, we have had students arrested for various offenses related to Nerf Wars. Additionally, students have been suspended and dismissed from Bellarmine because of dangerous behavior while participating in Nerf Wars.

Bellarmine Teams with Paystation for Additional Tuition Payment Option

We are excited to announce a new tuition payment option for Bellarmine families. The program uses paystation.com and allows families to make payments by echeck or credit card. (Please note that there is a convenience fee charged for echeck and credit card payments.) Families can use a new “Pay Tuition” button on the Bellarmine website homepage or tuition page.

This service is in addition to all other modes of payment (cash, checks, checks to our Lockbox, etc.) and we still offer monthly payment plans using checks, credit cards or the Automated Clearing House (ACH).  Please contact Mary Graves, at gravesm@bellarmineprep.org if you are interested in a monthly payment plan.

I-5 Tacoma City Center Exit to Close for 7 Months

Although we don’t know the impact, the I-5 Tacoma City Center Exit closure starting in mid-April may affect Bellarmine commuters. Please read the information provided by the Washington State Department of Transportation.  We recommend viewing both linked videos on the WSDOT website to see exactly what is going to be done.

Learning Resource Center

Construction and remodel in the Orell Library is complete and Bellarmine is excited to begin implementation of a more comprehensive program to support students in their academic programs. We will begin this spring with partial implementation of academic support programs for students with documented learning differences and provide full implementation of services in the 2017-18 school year.

2017 Academic Readiness Summer Program

Bellarmine’s Academic Readiness Summer Program uses a blended instruction format. A blended learning approach combines face to face classroom methods with computer-mediated activities to form an integrated instructional approach. Classes meet Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Wednesday’s instruction from home will be supported through our Moodle program. Enrolled students will have access to the Moodle resource and are expected to complete on-line assignments on time, and to have completed the iPad orientation prior to the fist day of class Monday, July 17th.

More details and registration information here.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Spring conferences are scheduled for the evening of April 12 from 6:30-9 p.m. to provide parents an opportunity to meet with teachers.  As in the fall, this evening conference is designed in an arena format to allow a brief conversation and academic update. Faculty will be located by department in the Names Gym and Campus Center. Please bring your student’s interim report card (to be mailed March 31), so you can locate the teachers you wish to see. As a reminder, you can check student progress for all classes at any time with the FamilyLink system. Any questions or concerns that would require a longer conversation with a teacher may be scheduled by phone or email.

Longtime Vice Principal Retiring After 39 Years

Longtime Academic Vice Principal Barbara Lidikay is retiring after 39 years of service to Bellarmine.  Since 1978, her leadership and expertise have helped shape Bellarmine into the well-respected, college preparatory school it is today.

“The academic program at Bellarmine stands out across the Pacific Northwest, and this is significantly due to Barbara’s leadership in this area,” Principal Cindy Davis said.

Nominations Open for Elizabeth Kelley Exemplary Teacher Award

A longtime Bellarmine tradition is to honor an outstanding teacher (or counselor, coach, librarian or campus minister) in the spring. The Elizabeth Kelley Exemplary Teacher Award is presented annually to a deserving Bellarmine faculty member. We welcome and encourage all nominations.  This year’s nomination deadline is April 20 and any member of the Bellarmine community -- employees, students, parents, alumni, Board members, etc., -- may submit a nomination.

Model UN Conference for Middle Schoolers Planned for April 22-23

Hoping to encourage and inspire young leaders, Bellarmine's Model UN's goal is simply to educate students about global issues and expand their horizons. Model UN is an international program with conferences around the world. Bellarmine Model UN students, who have seen firsthand the benefits of this program, have created a new conference geared specifically towards middle schoolers. Led by these students, the BellarMUN Middle School Conference will include a workshop to teach researching, public speaking, and consensus-building skills as well as an introduction to important global issues. Students will then get to "do" Model UN in a constructive, supervised atmosphere.

Lions Den – Parent Volunteer Opportunities

Parents – do you have a couple of hours during the day to assist in the Lions Den? Waiting for an hour or two before end of school to bring your student home? Consider volunteering in the Lions Den! It is a great opportunity to meet other Bellarmine parents, and allow us to stay open for the students and community. Students/staff are able to purchase their snacks, and parents/families can stop by to purchase Bellarmine apparel.

We would like to keep our hours of Monday – Friday, 7:30am – 3pm, but need more parent volunteers. If you are interested, please contact us here.

The Lions Den is parent volunteer driven, and is Philomathea’s fundraising arm. Philomathea supports our students through STEM scholarships, provides refreshments/hospitality at school events such as Open House, Parent Information Night, Grad Mass & Breakfast, etc.
