Meet the Head Coach
Coach Salazar enters his 24 year as the Varsity Head Coach at Bellarmine. This will be his 31 season of coaching high school basketball. Bernie has coached for 26 years at Bellarmine, four years at Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson, Arizona, and one year at Ferris High School in Spokane. Salazar is a full-time faculty member at Bellarmine where he teaches Spanish.
Coach Salazar is a graduate of Gonzaga University where he received his bachelor’s degree in Education. While at Gonzaga, he was a student assistant with the Gonzaga Men’s Basketball Program. Bernie and his wife Darlene (Guetle B ’85) have been blessed with four wonderful children, Jacob B’13, Julia B’15 and twins Jonas and Jordan B'23. They all enjoy being a part of the Lion Basketball family.
Coach Salazar and his staff have continued to build on the strong tradition of Bellarmine Basketball. They have reached the post season 18 of 23 seasons and the 14 of the last 15 years. The coaching staff has led the Lions to 10 State Tournament appearances, three semi-final appearances, a sixth place finish in 2004, a third place finish in 2008 and a fifth place finish in 2012. They have also helped 28 of their players continue their basketball careers in college.
Coach Salazar is living out his dream of being a high school basketball coach at a Catholic school. It is a true pleasure for him to witness the growth of the young men in our program through the game of basketball.
