Meet the Director of Cross Country & Track & Field

Coach Matt Ellis began his teaching career in Bellarmine's history department in the fall of 1997. He is a 1989 graduate of Seattle's Blanchet High School where he participated in track and cross country. Matt continued competitive running during college at the University of Puget Sound where he earned All-American honors in 1994. He earned his Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from Western Washington University in 1997. He took over as the Bellarmine varsity girls head cross country coach in 1998 and has taken the Lions to the state meet every year since then. In the fall of 2009, the boys and girls cross country teams were combined. That fall the boys made their first state appearance in ten years. In the spring, Matt serves as head coach of the Lion's boys and girls track & field.

The Lions have been very successful under his leadership. The girls’ team won the State Cross Country title in 2004 and 2013. They finished 4th in the 2004 Nike Cross Country National Meet and qualified again in 2013. They have had two individual state cross country champions.  The boys’ team finished 2nd in 2015 along with having the individual state champion. In track, the girls have won state team titles in 2005, 2008, and 2009. The Lady Lions have had 22 state champions and 67 medalists. The men have had 4 state champions and 29 medalists. Matt Ellis was named the Washington State Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2013 and the Track Coach of the Year in 2009. Matt has earned USATF Level 1 and Level 2 Coaching Certifications.

In his spare time, he still runs competitively and won the Napa Valley Marathon in 2002 and the Capital City Marathon in 2005. Matt also serves as the coach of the Tacoma City Running Club. Matt lives in Tacoma with his wife, Nancy.
