Mathematics Department Philosophy
Mathematics education at Bellarmine is grounded in the development of a critical mind that reasons clearly, recognizes weak logic and solutions, and effectively communicates the evaluation and analysis of complex problems. All courses strive to for a proper balance between mathematical reasoning, problem solving, and computational facility. The analysis and presentation of data and the use of equations to model real phenomena are coupled with fundamental number skills and a solid understanding of standard algorithms. The use of technological tools to speed computation is put into perspective along with the ability to estimate and assure the reasonableness of solutions. Mathematical foundations begin with number sense, Algebra and Geometry courses, while the upper level curriculum embraces the breadth and depth of the fields of Calculus and Statistics.
...God's universe is written with the language and characteristics of mathematics. - Galileo
