Greenhouse Mission & History
Wiegand Nursery & Greenhouse
Welcome to the Wiegand Nursery and Greenhouse on the Bellarmine campus in Tacoma. The nursery and greenhouse provide opportunities for students to work with and learn from plant life. The facility grows a variety of native plants including perennials, shrubs and trees.
It is located on the northwest corner of campus on the west side of the student parking lot behind Snyder Hall. The half acre of property, with a noteworthy mission and history, includes an outside nursery, three greenhouses and a garage. It is is operated by staff and volunteers including a director, two faculty members, 6-10 adult volunteers, Bellarmine botany, lab survey, work-study and other interested students.
Examples of the types of plants and flowers available at its annual plant sale include geraniums, impatiens, fuchsia, marigolds, petunias, perennials, bacopa, tomatoes, color bowls, accent plants, and bedding plants. The outdoor nursery contains anywhere from 2,000-10,000 Pacific Northwest native plants that are used for restoration projects on campus and within the community.
Visitors are welcome during the annual plant sale in May or by appointment. Visitors are encouraged to contact Greenhouse Director Donna Pitt, (253) 752-7701 ext. 882 for more information or to schedule an appointment. People interested in volunteering are also encouraged to contact Ms. Pitt.
