Counseling Department

Mission Statement: As an integral part in promoting the mission of Bellarmine, the Counseling Department encourages the self understanding and openness to growth that will allow our students to become the leaders in action the school calls them to be. Specifically, the Counseling Program, through individual and group interactions with students, in addition to classroom presentations, will:

  • Provide opportunities for developing a knowledge of self that allows students to own their gifts and use them for the good of the community.
  • Assist in the acquisition of study skills and habits for academic success
  • Help to develop student communication skills contributing to healthy relationships
  • Facilitate the college search and application process as well as the decision making that will determine the next steps in the student's journey.
  • Provide information about scholarships and summer programs and support in applying for them
  • Proactively intervene when life issues threaten student health or safety and provide support through the Student Assistance Program

Counseling

Bellarmine offers students a comprehensive counseling program to address personal, academic and college areas, as well as other post-secondary choices.

Counselors also provide Parent Information Nights throughout the year. Parent Nights are specific to each grade level, sophomore through senior.

Students are encouraged to see their counselor whenever they need assistance. Students come to the Counseling Center for a variety of reasons and counselors are trained to provide assistance in many areas. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Help with study skills or time management to improve academic performance
  • Support for personal issues such as low self esteem, relationship concerns, family issues, anxiety/depression and sexual identity questions.
  • Work with the Dean of Students surrounding bullying concerns
  • Support and accommodations in dealing with a learning disability
  • Answers to questions about standardized testing
  • Help with the college search and application process
  • Referrals for outside therapists or assessments

Except in emergencies, students should arrange appointments at least one day in advance. Students must have their teacher's permission to miss class for a counseling appointment and are responsible for the material they miss.

Groups can be formed as needed to assist in dealing with grief, loss, or other concerns.  Click on the following link for additional counseling resources. Counseling Resource Directory
