Distance Education at Bellarmine

Distance Education refers to teachers and students working together to learn even when separated by distance and time. We have been working to do more with distance education at Bellarmine. We have done this for several reasons.

  • Cases of bird flu have experts worried that a major flu outbreak could develop that could lead to school closures of 6 to 8 weeks at a time. We have worked closely with the Pierce County Health Department.

  • Forces of nature such as severe storms and earthquakes can close schools a few days to few weeks.
  • Uncontrolled events in the lives of teachers and students can keep them away from school for a time. At such times, people need good ways to stay connected to their educational life at Bellarmine while away.
  • Research is showing that distance education makes a unique contribution to how students learn and how teachers teach. Distance learning techniques can make homework more manageable, meaningful and effective.
  •

  • Distance education is becoming increasingly common in higher education and adult continuing education.

Bellarmine is working with an e-learning system called Moodle. Moodle allows us to create educational activities on the World Wide Web. The learning management system allows students and teachers to share information outside class. Teachers use Moodle to supplement course materials, provide additional help, communicate due dates, and enrich homework activities.
