Sister Georgia Wins Teacher of Year Award
Excerpted from article by Chris Rurik
The Lion Newspaper, May 2007
"I think it's awesome," says English teacher Julie Campbell. "She is so dedicated and she is one of the most genuine people," says science teacher Jennifer Phillips.
"She's kind of one of those unsung people," say social studies teacher Bob Miller. "She is without exception, the best librarian I have ever worked with," says social studies teacher Robert Payne.
"I think she is the superlative choice because she has committed to this school and her faith," says English teacher Bill Baerg.
At the academic awards assembly on Friday, May 18, Sister Georgia Yianakulis won the Elizabeth Kelley Exemplary Teacher Award. After senior Kevin Durkin announced the award, thunderous applause reigned in the packed Booster Gym for minutes as Sr. Georgia walked to the stage, a look of incredulity and gratitude on her face.
The award was the culmination of the annual academic awards assembly, a gathering where students and faculty are honored for their outstanding performance in the classroom.
"It's a very humbling award because?جø¬?I consider my colleagues to be so outstanding," says Sr. Georgia. "So to receive it is something very special."
Sr. Georgia has been working at Bellarmine for 15 years in various roles, including her main position as head librarian. She comes into contact with almost every student throughout the year, inspiring them with her gentle yet strong nature and surprising sense of humor.
She has been instrumental in the networking of Bellarmine through the Internet and the accessibility of information, spending countless hours thinking up and organizing new ways that students and faculty can access information.
Recently, on the senior Magis Retreat, she renewed her vows to Sisters of the Holy Names, marking her 51st year of personal dedication to the complete service of God.
The Elizabeth Kelley Exemplary Teacher Award was started in 1986 with the goal of recognizing annually the teachers who daily make Bellarmine not only academically powerful, but also personally enriching.
Each year, nomination forms are distributed to students, faculty, parents and anyone else interested. Generally, about 40 forms are returned, each telling glowingly of how a faculty member has changed a life or been an inspiration. Next, a committee is formed to sort through all the forms, and somehow choose one faculty member to receive the award. The committee is made up of a school board member, the principal of one of the Catholic grade schools, a previous faculty winner, a student delegate, and a leading community figure.
Sr. Georgia says that the honor of the award dwarfs everything else. "Anything else that comes along with it, like the flowers, are nice?جø¬?but I think more [of] the honor of receiving that. It's also confirmation that some of the things that I've been doing have been appreciated and have been helpful."
As another school year winds down to a close, it is only fitting that the Bellarmine community should honor a teacher for his/her outstanding work. And, months after entering her 51st year serving God as a nun, Sr. Georgia Yianakulis was the perfect choice for the award.
