Bellarmine Hosts Annual African American Summit

The 13th Annual African American Summit was hosted by Bellarmine on November 2, 2009, in which 114 students were welcomed from five other Jesuit schools throughout the West Coast: Jesuit High in Portland, Seattle Prep in Seattle, Gonzaga Prep in Spokane, Saint Ignatius in San Francisco, and Jesuit High in Sacramento.

Bellarmine students organized this year?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s summit and, along with the diversity directors, selected the theme, ?¢‚Ǩ?ìDream it, Believe it, Achieve it: Changing the Future.?¢‚Ǩ¬ù

Among the speakers at the summit were Erin Jones, Assistant Superintendent from the Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, Attorney Jerry Lee, EEO Officer for the City of Tacoma, Jordan Ginn, Tacoma high school teacher and Bellarmine grad from the class of 2001, and Jermaine Easterlin from Americorps and Bellarmine grad from the class of 2004.

A senior at Gonzaga Prep reflected, ?¢‚Ǩ?ìEvery year I look forward to the African American Summit. It's more than just dialogue and sharing of an experience, but a celebration of a culture. Year after year, I leave more confident and educated. I am so blessed to have had this opportunity.?¢‚Ǩ¬ù

The African American Summit was initiated by Bellarmine 13 years ago and has been hosted by Bellarmine 11 times. In 2007 and 2008, Bellarmine also hosted the Asian/American Summit, as well as an in-house Latino/American Summit in 2008.

?¢‚Ǩ?ìThe summits have been an effective means for students to share experiences and develop solutions to challenges faced by minority students attending private secondary schools,?¢‚Ǩ¬ù said Bellarmine?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s President, Jack Peterson.
