Student Receives VFW's Voice of Democracy Award
Winning essay forwarded to district competition
February 18, 2010 -- Nick S. Burrill of Gig Harbor, a senior at Bellarmine Preparatory School, was awarded the Veterans of Foreign Wars' first-place Certificate of Achievement and $75 on Thursday for his winning entry in VFW's Voice of Democracy audio-essay scholarship program.
The presentation was made by Post Commander Dale Goheen during an awards ceremony at Gig Harbor's VFW Herman Uddenberg Post 1854.
The Voice of Democracy program was created by the VFW in 1947, and it annually recognizes high school students to whom it provides more than $3 million in scholarships.
Historically, the patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander in Chief is purposely kept broad in scope to allow for participants' flexibility.
The 2009-10 theme was "Does my generation have a role in America's future?"
Burill's winning essay has been forwarded to the next level of competition at VFW District Four. If selected as winner there, he could compete at state or national level for a $30,000 scholarship grand prize. Burrill's mom, Viviana Burrill, accompanied him at the ceremony.
For more information about the contest, call Goheen at 253-858-7568.
