Joe Waters took over the head coaching job for the Lion boys soccer team after completing a professional soccer career that lasted 23 years. In 2004, he took the boys team to the state title and was ranked #1 in the nation. Joe took over the girls soccer team in 2003 -- replacing longtime coach Jenny Phillips who stepped down after a very successful thirteen years of coaching Bellarmine girls soccer. The team placed 2nd in state in 2003 and 1st in state in 2004.
Joe grew up in Limerick, Ireland, and began his professional soccer career in 1969 at the age of 15. After playing for the Republic of Ireland U15 and U18 national teams, Joe competed for both Leicester City and Grimsby Town, as well as the Irish national team. In 1984, Joe moved indoors and joined the Tacoma Stars of the MISL. In 1987, Jumpin' Joey led the Stars to the MISL finals for the first time in the team's history.
Joe has three daughters -- Kelly, Shauna, and Lindley. He and his wife, Sue, an avid soccer player and successful coach herself, live in Tacoma's north end.
