Meet the Head Coach
Head Coach Bernie Salazar begins his eleventh season this winter at the helm of the successful Lion boys basketball program. Bernie grew up in Arizona, and attended Regis Prep where he won two Arizona state championships as a player. After two years at Cochise Junior College, Bernie transferred to Gonzaga University to complete his undergraduate education.
After four years as an assistant coach at Salpointe High School in Tucson, Bernie joined the Bellarmine faculty and basketball staff in the fall of 1992. In 1994, he replaced longtime Lion Head Coach Steve Anstett. In his eight years as the Lion's head coach, Bernie has led his team to a West Central District championship and three state tournament berths.
Bernie and his wife, Darlene, (Guetle B'85), reside in University Place and have four children, Jacob, Julia, and toddler twin boys Jonas and Jordan.
