Greenhouse Mission & History
Bellarmine is a Catholic school in the Jesuit tradition of education. It has close ties to the Jesuit order whose inspired leaders began this enterprise in one remote building in 1928 on the present site that overlooks the city and Mt. Rainier.
Bellarmine moved from an all boys to a co-educational school in 1974. That year, St. Leo's and Aquinas Academy girls' schools joined with Bellarmine and created a consolidated Catholic high school for the Tacoma-Pierce County area. The merger was a success story.
Today, Bellarmine enrolls approximately 1,000 students. They travel from as far away as Thurston, Kitsap and King counties. The school sits on 42 acres and has grown from one building to many, including a state-of-the-art library and computer facility.
Solid, challenging college preparatory courses form the foundation of Bellarmine's academic program, but students aren't limited to the basics. A broad range of elective offerings are available. Students are also encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities, ranging from football to chess.
The convictions of Bellarmine's curriculum carry a hope that our students will become men and women who are personally experienced in the Jesuit mode of education. Bellarmine strives to graduate students who are open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving, and committed to doing justice. Central to this experience is the sharing of the Christian elements of education with others. For this reason, education at Bellarmine is a community experience. The goal is to produce "men and women for and with others."
