Meet the Head Coach

Joe Waters took over the head coaching job for the Lion boys soccer team in 1992 after completing a professional soccer career that lasted 23 years.

Joe grew up in Limerick, Ireland, and began his professional soccer career in 1969 at the age of 15. After playing for the Republic of Ireland U15 and U18 national teams, Joe competed for both Leicester City and Grimsby Town, as well as the Irish national team. In 1984, Joe moved indoors and joined the Tacoma Stars of the MISL. In 1987, Jumpin' Joey led the Stars to the MISL finals for the first time in the team's history.

In his nineteen years, the Lions have won thirteen Narrows League championships and been to 14 state tournaments and were state champions in 2008. In 2004, the team won the state championship and was voted national champions.

Joe has three grown daughters -- Kelly, Shauna, and Lindley. He and his wife, Sue, an avid soccer player and successful coach herself, reside in Tacoma's north end.
