The emphasis on the health and fitness of the Bellarmine community soared to unprecedented heights in January 2011, with the opening of its new Fitness Center on the west side of the new gym. Students in several physical education classes were the first to try out the new equipment and several commented that the new Fitness Center was both awesome and amazing. “It’s quite amazing what we’ve developed here,” said freshman Elijah Klein. “I’m impressed how Bellarmine is committed to our fitness.”

The 4,528 square-foot, state-of-the-art facility is two levels with strength equipment on the lower floor and cardiovascular equipment on the upper floor. The huge windows on the center’s west walls overlook the student parking lot, track and baseball field and allow significant natural light into the room.

The beautiful new facility, which opened just over 10 months after groundbreaking, features the latest in fitness and exercise equipment that caters to all users, from novices to varsity student-athletes. With its glass façade, two-levels with a mezzanine on the top level, and exterior landscaping, the fitness center sharply transforms the look of the campus from the main parking lot.

Athletic Director Ed Ploof B’75 is happy with the new Fitness Center. “I’m very pleased,” he said. “We now have the tools to promote and enhance skills for health and wellness for our entire student body as well as keep our student athletes performing at the highest level.”

Triples Workout Space

The opening of the Fitness Center significantly improves the workout experience for members of the Bellarmine community from the standpoints of health and fitness, convenience, and aesthetics. The new center nearly triples the amount of workout space available to students -- compared to the space in the previous weight room in Names Gym.

Equipment Includes 32 Cardio Machines

All brand new equipment in the Fitness Center includes power racks and free weights for weight lifting, 14 different types of cable weights for younger student lifters, and 32 cardiovascular machines including bikes, stairmasters, summit climbers and treadmills. A state-of-the-art sound system pumps music throughout the center.

Equipment Funded Through PRIDE Auction Donors

The Fitness Center equipment was funded with over $103,000 raised by generous donors at last year’s PRIDE Auction. It was the largest amount raised through the fund-an-item in the school’s history.

Benefits to Be Felt For Years to Come

The Fitness Center will go a long way toward reaching Bellarmine’s vision of stronger and healthier students as well as more competitive athletes. The goal of the center is to provide a healthy, positive and safe environment that will build and strengthen the mind, body and spirit and the benefits will be felt for years by countless members of the Bellarmine community.
