A Day in the Life of an Alumni Service Corps Volunteer

As the Alumni Service Corps (ASC) Volunteer on campus, Julia Maher wears many hats. Read this article to get a snapshot of a day in her life.
I begin each day working in the Student Services Office at 7:15 a.m. I assist with various tasks: updating the sign-in sheet, tearing tickets, preparing sub rosters, filing, and adding student attendance into myBellarmine. After this, I start getting ready for my first class. Read below to see how my A and B Days differ.

A Day
During first period, I assist with Patrea Fernandez’s Spanish 3 class. I help in many ways—I participate in the class, work with students who need extra help, grade quizzes, and check student notebooks.
During second period, I work on some projects. Currently I am finding all of the Bellarmine senior class composites, measuring the frames, and adding their locations and measurements to a spreadsheet. Soon, I will also take pictures of them.

Every day, I supervise first lunch in the St. Ignatius Loyola Foyer. This happens after second period. I get my lunch in the Campus Center, and then I walk to the foyer and make sure that students throw away their trash.
During third period, I also work on projects. I help with the Communications Department, writing articles and creating graphics for Bellarmine’s social media.

During fourth period, I serve as the Volunteer Broadcast Advisor in Jeanne Hanigan’s journalism class. We create stories on various topics and seek to highlight student voices. I teach students how to execute the entire process—from brainstorming to shooting to editing. My expertise and passion lie in video editing.

B Day
During fifth period, I help with an Algebra Lab course in the Academic Center of Excellence (ACE). I work with freshmen on various concepts to strengthen math skills.

I also supervise first lunch on B Days, and sixth and eighth period follow similar schedules as second and third period. During seventh period, I will often help students with essays or act as a reader and scribe for tests in the ACE. I also help in the ACE after school from 2:30–3:15 p.m.

Other Responsibilities
As time allows, I act as an on-call sub for classes. I also help with the Experience Bellarmine Days and the Ignatian Formation program, assist with one retreat, and participate in the Adult Formation Program.
